WHAT IS LAST RESORT AB?
Few skate brands have managed to build such a recognizable identity with so little branding as Last Resort AB. Its small, distinctive logo has become one of the brand's most recognizable elements, yet its origins are far less calculated than you might expect. Sami Tolppi, co-founder and designer of Last Resort AB, has explained that the symbol simply started as a graphic he created and eventually became the brand's logo.
That simplicity is part of what makes it so appealing. Rather than relying on oversized logos, Last Resort AB has always preferred discreet branding, allowing the shape, construction and details of its footwear to speak for themselves. The symbol itself has no official, fixed meaning beyond its role as the brand's graphic identity, leaving its slightly strange and playful character open to interpretation.
The story of Last Resort AB began around 2018, when Sami Tolppi and Daniel began developing the project before reconnecting with Swedish skateboarder and Polar Skate Co. founder Pontus Alv. Their shared idea was straightforward: create the skate shoes they felt were missing from the market. The first Last Resort AB models arrived in 2020, combining classic vulcanized construction with a distinctly Scandinavian approach to design and functionality.
Even small details reflect this philosophy. Pontus Alv has explained that the tread pattern was developed with Scandinavian streets in mind, including the small stones and traces of winter salt commonly found on the ground. It is a detail that perfectly represents the brand's approach: functionality first, without unnecessary decoration.
The name itself also contains a reference to its origins. “AB” stands for Aktiebolag, the Swedish term for a limited company, giving the brand a subtle connection to its Swedish roots. From its early skate footwear, Last Resort AB has since expanded into apparel and accessories while maintaining the same understated aesthetic and independent spirit.
More than a logo, Last Resort AB's symbol has become a reflection of the brand itself: simple, recognizable and deliberately different. It is an identity that doesn't need to be loud to stand out, which may be precisely why it has found such a strong place within both skateboarding and contemporary fashion.
